Student BLOSSOMS Contest During MIT's IAP
BLOSSOMS logoDuring MIT's Independent activities Period (IAP) in January, LINC will sponsor a contest for graduate and undergraduate students to create BLOSSOMS video modules. Two winning designs will be videotaped and included in the on-line repository of BLOSSOMS videos.

IAP…. YOUR'VE GOT THE POWER!

The power to encourage young people worldwide!

The power to change their lives!

The power to inspire a love of science, math and engineering!

Be an integral part of an MIT educational initiative aimed at high school students worldwide.

The project is BLOSSOMS (Blended Learning Open Source Science or Math Studies), developing a free repository of science and math interactive video modules for high school students, initially seeded by MIT’ers and educators in Jordan and Pakistan. BLOSSOMS aims to enhance critical-thinking in high school students and to inspire them in science, math and engineering.

During IAP, we are sponsoring a contest for MIT students (undergraduate and graduate) to create BLOSSOMS video modules. Two winning designs will be videotaped and included in the on-line repository of BLOSSOMS videos. Please visit http://linc.mit.edu/iapcontest/ or contact BLOSSOMS Project Manager Liz Murray (emurray@mit.edu) or Alison Hearn (hearn@mit.edu) for information.

Schedule: Save these dates!
The contest will take place during the first two weeks of IAP.

There will be an initial meeting for all participants on Monday, January 5, 2009, room 1-390, 12 to 2 pm during which the BLOSSOMS initiative and contest will be described.

The process is to prepare a one-page proposal of your ideas for an interactive video module. The proposals are due by the second meeting, Monday, January 12, 2009, room 1-390, 12 to 2 pm. Finalists will be decided and announced by email within 24 hours of the second meeting.

The finalists will then prepare and rehearse a proto-script to be performed at the third meeting, on Friday, January 16, 2009, room 1-390, 12 to 2 pm. All participants are invited to attend and enjoy a reception celebration afterwards.

The two winning scripts will be videotaped and produced during February 2009. BLOSSOMS follows a blended learning approach, allowing the in-class teacher to alternate structured video segments with active in-class learning. This pedagogical approach enhances and leverages the role of the classroom teacher while at the same time introducing a less threatening but powerful technological teaching aide. So, your video — should you choose to enter — must be an alternating sequence of video segments, with the in-class teacher (whom you will never meet) taking control of her class between segments. Have fun thinking about this contest! We hope you enter.
